Creative Decorating DIY Ideas and a Winner!

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .
Did you see the Martha Stewart show yesterday?  I record it and then end up deleting a lot of them because I just don't have time to watch.  I watched yesterday's episode last night, though, and  I'm so glad I did!  They showed how to make this Embossed Velvet Christmas Stocking which I was pretty impressed with, but my favorite part was the Project Decorate rooms.

I really liked decorating editor Rebecca Robertson's eclectic modern room!  Great use of color and pattern and awesome DIY ideas...

For example, she used sawn balusters and radiator grill material to make this graphic statement on the wall. For window shutters on either side, she chose radiator grill patterns that complemented the balusters' shape.

She used radiator grill material again on the front of these glass-front cabinets from Ikea...

Continuing to think outside the box, she made the coffee table from an army cot and then set 4 DIY trays on top to make a hard surface. To make the trays, she covered baking sheets with a zigzag fabric and topped them with a thin sheet of Plexiglas. Tutorial HERE. (she designed the fabric and then had it printed at Spoonflower.com - at the time of this post $18-32/yard to have them print your own design - not bad for custom!)

She pulled the aquamarine color from a stripe in the abstract painting hanging over the sofa and used it on the ceiling. To continue to tie the room together, she cut radiator grill material into wide strips, edged them with 1/4-inch trim, and mounted them several inches away from the molding.

Doors embellished with the same radiator grill material used for the cabinets ease the transition from the living room to the hallway.

Love the creativity and outside-the-box thinking in this room!  You can go here to see the rest of the images of Rebecca's room and Kevin's room, and even vote for your favorite if you would like.

One Way To Keep A Bedskirt In Place

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Janell did a bedskirt post the other day and there was discussion in the comments about how everyone kept theirs from moving around (or not). I said that I would do a post about a solution that works for me, so here goes!
The rug pad is a little bit more of an initial investment than other solutions might be, but I've had it for 5 years and it's still good as new so I'm assuming I'll never really have to change it out. When I'm ready for a new bedskirt I'll just detach this bedskirt, sew or glue velcro to the new one, attach it and call it good.

The rug pad really does want to stick to the mattress, which is the idea, but when you're putting it on for the first time or rotating the mattress it definitely takes two people because the mattress won't slide on the pad. Once it's in place though you're good to go because it's not movin'! It's been the perfect solution for me, so maybe it will be for some of you as well. Nice to have options. :-)

DIY Leaf and Fern Projects

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

A couple of fun projects for your weekend (like no one has anything else to do! :-))

I ran across these DIY leaf candes at Canadian House and Home and thought they were so pretty! You can learn how to make your own here

I also like they way they used book pages in this fern artwork. Larger print would make more of a graphic statement. Tutorial here.

Oh. and a LITTLE late to the party, but guess who's finally on facebook!

Adding Custom Detail

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Remember last weekend when I did this post on Angled Staircase Wall Inspiration? Shortly after that, Judy from Judith B Designs e-mailed photos to me of her staircase makeover. I knew you would want to see them too, so I asked if I could share them.

With the help of her husband, she took her angled staircase wall from this...

to this...

to this! She says, "We really like the detail it adds to the room and the addition of more white brightens the space as well." I agree 100%. Didn't they do a great job? It's beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing it with us, Judy!

Now just in case you don't have a beautiful staircase with an angled wall in your home just begging for detail , here's something that pretty much everyone has. Doors. Lisa from Paint in My Hair (via Tatertots and Jello) transformed her doors with paint and $13 worth of molding and you can too! (tutorial here)...

Did you know...

or stripe your walls with electrical tape? The cleverly creative Camila did and her tutorial is here.

I think a version using colored tape could be fun too! (the image below is actually wallpaper from harlequin) ...

Do It Yourself Projects From Extreme Makeover and Wallpaper Sources

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

I'm a fan of Extreme Makeover Home Edition (sometimes I like the designs and sometimes I don't) because I love to watch the way everyone comes together to help a complete stranger have a better life. It's a good way to start out my week being reminded that every day that we're healthy and life is fairly "normal" with all of the little things in place that we take for granted, it is a day to be grateful for.

Anywho, last Sunday the designers made a huge chandelier out of doors for the foyer. It was way too big to fit in most of our average sized homes, but it was a fun DIY concept and I thought you all might like to see it, if you didn't see the show. Unfortunately, the only image I could find of the project was the one door above.

BUT. When I was on the website, I noticed that they have tutorials for DIY projects that they've completed on their shows (along with photos of the homes they've designed). I thought I would include a few here and give you the link for the rest if you're interested...

Eduardo's Natural Light Fixture

There are some DIYers in blog land that would probably do this light fixture in no time flat. I like the combination of the branches and metal.

Pallet Coffee Table

I've seen pallet tables before, but they were always rustic. Finishing this one in a bright, glossy color gives it a fresh, modern feel.

Ty's Dining Room Puzzle Table

This table is obviously huge, but I think it would be great in a scaled-down version, especially for a kids room play table or desk top. With shorter legs the scaled down version could be cute in a family room as a coffee table too.

Fall Decorating in Turquoise and Red

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

BHG.com

We see a lot of orange/rust/gold/cranberry schemes in fall decorating (for example, the great lantern pumpkin-in-an-urn idea above) and I'm a fan, but I thought it would be fun to mix it up a bit today with these turquoise and red images showing some creative ideas from BHG.com.

This wall art is an image of a burnished oak leaf printed on canvas that's fitted around stretcher bars...
A unique "acorn tree" with painted acorns hung on twine loops from tree branches...

BHG.com tells you how to make these acorn napkin rings here...

Instructions for making these acorn petals are here...

Hope you're enjoying your weekend! It's cool here, but it's finally sunny and that's a welcome relief after some major rainy days.

One of my favorite things in my kitchen is the divided cupboard above the stove where I can store all my cookie sheets, etc. If you like that idea but don't currently have one, Marthastewart.com shows you how to organize your pantry or cupboard using simple tension rods...

Chez Larsson couldn't find the right tension rods for the Martha Stewart project shown above, so she used metal lantern sticks that she already had and installed them in holes drilled in the bottom of her cabinet (tutorial here)...
