My Christmas Tree

So here's the scoop on my Christmas tree this year. Very much a just-figure-it-out-as-you-go project. :-)

I decided to put it up in the family room, thinking that we would probably see and enjoy it more there than where I had it in previous years.(btw, it's fake (in case you can't tell :-)) I bought it on the after-Christmas clearance 5 years ago. It's not bad for a fake and I DO love the convenience of having a prelit!  One of these years we may have to put up a real one, just for something different - and of course there's nothing like the smell of fresh pine...)

Moving the tree created a bit of an ornament dilemma for me. I didn't want to buy a bunch of new ornaments, and I also didn't want to do traditional red. I had these orange ornaments already so I decided to use them with silver (some of which I purchased new). I already had the snowflakes from previous years, and picked up some inexpensive icicle ornaments to add a litte something extra.

As I was decorating it was still feeling a little bare, but rather than buying more to fill I decided to just use ribbon. It's something that I can use again for something, even if it's not the tree next year, unlike ornaments that I may tire of. The orange ribbon I just casually tied to the branches...

The silver ribbon started coming off of the roll this way and I thought it looked pretty, so I left it curled and just cut it into lengths I thought I liked and added that too.

Sort of random and unconstructed, but not so bad.  Now if I decide to go in a completely different direction next year it will be easier to justify because I didn't create a completely new scheme full of all new ornaments that I would feel bad about not using.

Decorating with Silver Trays and Two New Giveaway Winners

If you're looking for something a little different to accessorize your walls, using silver/metal trays is a nice idea..  Gives you a little shine, but  not as reflective as a mirror. This could be a fairly inexpensive look to achieve, too. 

• Find them at inexpensive sources such as Goodwill, flea markets and garage sales, and check with friends and relatives to see if they have trays in their stash that they no longer use or want. 
• Use any trays that you already have, even if they're not silver/metal and spray them with one of those fabulous metallic spray paints that are out now.

Even though the trays below are clean and simple, I think they work well on their own in this room. If  you felt you needed a little something more hanging them from ribbon would give more dimension.

I like the idea of using trays as a backdrop. There are many ways you could do that, but a simple one would be to attach a picture frame to each one.

Here's another possibility: Picture the 3 trays above with the following changes:

• a square picture frame centered and attached to the top left tray. It could be empty or filled with a family photo or a graphic print paper, for example.
• a large painted letter attached to the large round tray on the right,
• a plain shelf (in scale with the tray) attached to the bottom left tray and  accessorized with a little something(s).



In this reader project showcasec on Ohdeedoh, the trays were painted with chalkboard paint to create a cute nursery wall display...

We've done a post on kitchen ideas and design tips. Sometimes we talk about diy projects for the kitchen, and we've shared an occasional recipe or two (chocolate anyone?). We've even talked a little bit about entertaining.

And may I also say that I'm still loving the overscaled lamps on the kitchen island whether there's anywhere to plug them in or not?

But I don't think we've ever had a giveaway that specifically relates to the kitchen. So... we're going to remedy that today!

I'm fairly certain that no one needs an introduction to Tupperware, and I'm also sure that many of you love the wide variety of products that they have for everything from food prep/cooking/serving,

to clean-up, to refrigerating/freezing/organizing your foods.

One of the must-have items on my list right now is this Super Cereal Storer. Because cereal boxes seem to only be 1/2 full to begin with, I have to buy more boxes and I can't stand the boxes taking up space in my pantry.
