Adding A Touch of Whimsy or The Unexpected

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Traditional Home Photo: Colleen Duffley

Happy Sunday!

If you're looking for a quick way to shake up an existing space, one simple idea is to add a little whimsy or just a touch of the unexpected, like the whimsical art and pillow above or the unexpected graphic/modern art in the traditional space below.

Chests, Shelves, A Headboard and Mirrors

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

I'm sure that's one of the more creative post titles you've ever seen, isn't it? :-)

I'm still debating as to whether I would actually ever do this or not, but of course I like the fact that it's different and creative. Using two chests to the sides behind the sofa rather than a sofa table behind and end tables on the sides? What do you think? (image from CR Laine)

I wanted to include this image in my shelf inspiration post, but couldn't find it at the time. Isn't it interesting the way they created these shelves to follow the curve of the window? (image from BHG.com)

If you have an awkward corner in your bedroom, this idea from BHG.com might work for you. Rather than ignoring the corner, they maximized the space by creating a corner headboard storage unit. They've included reading-light wall sconces and electrical outlets, and the plug-ins are close at hand for alarm clocks, cell phone chargers, etc.

I know many of you have seen this already, but for those of you who haven't - Jenny at Pearl Street Interiors hung two inexpensive unframed IKEA mirrors (love the shape!) over the plain sheet mirror in her parent's bathroom using 3M hanging strips. I love the idea and the dimension that it adds, don't you? To see the rest of this makeover, click here...

This isn't really a mirror, but I like the shape of this Ghost Mirror from Country Living. Template and tutorial here.

Pom Pom/Ball Fringe

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Patricia Gray blog

I've been seeing pom pom or ball fringe around a fair amount lately on everything from home decor to clothing (remember this scarf?) If you're a pom pom/ball fringe fan, this post shows you some ideas for incorporating it into your decor.

If you want to add some texture to your window treatment, how about using ball fringe like they did here? My inclination would have been to add the fringe to the inside edge, so the fact that they embellished the outside edge instead makes it more interesting to me.

Homes and Gardens

If you really like ball fringe, you could make this very textural cornice from BHG.com. Complete tutorial here.

If that's a little much for you, how about just using pom poms on your curtain tieback? Perennials Fabrics

Some of the other places you could add this trim are fairly obvious such as pillows, bedskirts, ottomans, towels, lampshades, etc. but a not-so-obvious idea would be to trim your office shelves.

or to add to your gifts...

Raffia pom pom drink stirrers from marthastewart.com. Tutorial here.

Vivaterra has pom pom throws and pillows...

So does Pier 1...

I realize this is a Christmas project, but knowing me I won't remember that I found it by then so I'm posting it now. The tutorial for this snowball pom pom wreath is at marthatstewart.com...

Have an awesome day!

CR Laine Inspiration

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Okay. This may not qualify as an exactly substantial post, but I came across this image on the CR Laine furniture website and it made me smile.

I'm loving so many styles/color schemes/creative ideas right now and they seem to change/grow on a daily basis, but today this one's definitely on the list! :-) It may or may not be your style, but wouldn't you at least love to hang out here for an afternoon?

Don't You Just Love Summer?

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Lemon Place Cards

Country Living photo: Alexandra Rowley

I definitely do! You may have noticed that my blog posts are rather sporadic lately. Part of that is life in general, and part of it is summer!

I actually have a lot of ideas and some great posts started that I think you'll really like if I can just sit down and pull them all together. I'm not going to stress about it though because summer flies by way too quickly! I plan on enjoying every minute of it and I hope you all do the same. I WILL be posting but if I disappear for brief periods, just know that I'll be back! :-)

House Beautiful photo: Victoria Pearson

I recently purchased the turquoise version (that color isn't on-line for some reason) of this pom-pom scarf at Old Navy and I love it! It's a large square and my friend and I, of course, immediately noticed that it could also be used as a colorful summer throw for a table... (It also comes in green and neutral)

Speaking of brightening things up for summer, I talked in my Decorating with Throws post about the idea of using a throw to disguise a chair when you want a new look but can't afford a new chair. This image from BHG.com is a good example of that concept and also shows how you can brighten your look for summer by not only covering the center of the chair (or sofa) with a colorful throw,

but
- adding bright throw pillows,
- freshening up your artwork with some colorful images and
- adding colorful books (still love the idea of using them for a side table)
- and bright or light accessories.
These are all low-cost/low-commitment changes that can be swapped out by season.

Another image from BHG.com. The valance and the roman shade are nice, but I think it's a fun idea, especially for summer, to add the bud vases above...

Hope you have a wonderful, relaxing weekend! :-)

If you're short on display space, how about using your windows as a shelf? (obviously you don't want to go crazy with this idea or it could get pretty cluttered, but I think the way they've displayed the artwork in this room works)...

How about this staggered display shelf from BHG.com?...

BHG.com says, "A recessed nook is the perfect place to show off your favorite art and display your collections. Remove a section of drywall to reveal a 4- to 8-inch-deep niche between wall studs. Consult a contractor to make sure it's safe to remove any horizontal bracing elements. Then add shelves"...
