Sunshine Award and A Sunny Home

Thank you to Sarah at Real Estate Style for awarding me the Sunshine Award recently. It made my day!

I'm supposed to pass the award on to 12 other blogs whose positivity & creativity inspire others in the blog world. Since there are so many awesome bloggers out there who do just that, it's really too hard to choose just 12. Therefore, I'm passing the award on to all of you. I'm constantly amazed at the creativity out there and it definitely adds sunshine to my day. Feel free to pass it on and spread the sunshine. :-)

A post talking about sunshine seemed the perfect place to share this home by designer Kathryn Chaplow (Photographer James Yochum) that was featured in the January/February 2008 issue of Home magazine (pointclickhome.com). I love her creative use of color. Makes me happy just looking at it. You can see the rest of the home here.

Giveaway tomorrow! Have a good day...

Valentine's Day Ideas

A fun idea to use as part of your Valentine's Day tablescape

I did get a few comments that people were interested in Valentine's Day ideas and since a lot more of you follow than comment, I'm going to just assume that there are others of you that would be interested as well. :-)

Also, as hard as it is for me to commit to, I'm going to be mostly out of blogland for the rest of the week. I just really need to catch up. I'll be back posting next week, so I hope you'll all meet me back here.

A vase filled with pistachios and carnations would be a pretty addition to your decor.

Random Inspiration in Pink

houseandhome.com Photo Ted Yarwood

As seems typical for my random self, there really isn't anything that connects the images and ideas in this post except the color pink. Let's just say with Valentine's Day coming up I thought I should do something pink (which I suppose means I'll also have to do red? Hmmm... Maybe. We'll see but don't hold your breath. :-))

Are you interested in a Valentine's Day Ideas post or not? I could go either way, so it's up to you. I'll go by how many comments I get that say yes. If I don't get any, we'll skip it.

A good example of how you can add a little pink to your decor without going frou-frou.

Southern Living Photo Jean Allsopp Styling Alan Henderson

This is such a pretty girls room and would be fairly simple to recreate on a small budget. The wall color, the headboard and the pillow are the three elements that really make the statement here. Paint would be inexpensive to do (the color they used in this room was Pink Sky from Ralph Lauren Paint), the headboard is definitely DIYable (is that a word?) with the right tools, and even though this particular pillow is discontinued it wouldn't be that hard to find a pillow or fabric to give you the same look.

Southern Living Photo Laurey W. Glenn/Styling Scott Martin

If you like pink, this might be your room. In fact, I'm absolutely certain you would have to love pink for this to be your room. But, if you don't love pink, you could still use this as your room recipe and swap out the pink for your favorite color.

Southern Accents Photo Thibault Jeanson

Remember back in October when we talked about laminated fabrics for areas/items where you needed a high scrub factor? I had seen the Amanda Nisbet room that inspired the post in a BHG Decorating magazine that I had, but couldn't find it on-line to use it in the post. I actually just ran across the room the other day at BHG.com. The roman shade and decorative pillows in this kitchen banquette area were made with laminated fabrics.

Notice how the graphic black and white rug in this room punches it up a bit and makes it less predictable. If you have a room that needs a little punching up this idea might do the trick.

Creative Decorating Ideas and DIY

Country Living Photo Laura Moss

Happy Saturday everyone! Hope you're having a great weekend. Just a few (or four) creative decorating and DIY ideas for you today.

A clever and inexpensive idea (above) to use two small tables with two little ottomans instead of a coffee table. The ottomans can be completely tucked under, partially tucked under and used as additional display/functional space, or completely pulled out and moved around when you need extra seating.

How fun are these Pottery Barn inspired pillows from Tatertots and Jello? Love them. Tutorial here.

Infarrantly Creative not only uses game boards for art but she made frames for hers and cleverly stores the games pieces right on the back of the art. I love this idea for a game or family room. Check out her complete tutorial HERE.

Simple, inexpensive wall art that makes a big statement by Older and Wisor. See how she did it here.

I also posted the Craft Closet Folding Work Surface Tutorial today, if you were interested in seeing that.

Window Treatments - Dip Dye?

homesandgardens.com

The window treatment in the photo above has been dip dyed to create the band of color that you see on the bottom. Have any of you heard of this or tried it? This one looks nice, but I think if I tried it I would finish the border between the white and the color with some type of trim. Interesting no-sew idea for adding color. Yes? No?

homesandgardens.com

Thought I would include this photo too as an example of adding some color and texture to window treatments while still keeping them light by just adding a band of the fabric of your choice at the top and bottom keeping the rest of the curtain in a white, more sheer fabric to allow the light to filter through. Another option would be to just add the darker fabric at the top or bottom only for an even airier look. Probably stating the obvious, but it's also a great way to add length to curtains that are too short.

Have a great weekend!

Creative Decorating Ideas - 6

Designer Ann Nicholson Country Living Photo Keith Scott Morton

First of all, can we all take a moment to acknowledge the fabulous size and shape of the mirror in the photo above?
That's actually not why I chose the photo though. Look closely into the next room at the window (I believe it's an office). See how they've used ceiling height bookshelves on either side of the window instead of curtains and a bench sitting in the middle as sort of a modified version of a window seat? To finish it off, they've centered words above the window.

This pretty room below is a good example of a neutral room that's kept interesting with a mix of patterns, textures and some pops of color. I'm liking the layered mirrors...

This great bedroom makeover from Southern Living (photos by Laurey W. Glenn) incorporates several very creative ideas.

For example, for a more contemporary look, a panel of a bold geometric fabric bordered with a solid linen was pulled taut on the top of this canopy bed frame. The beautiful bed pillow was made from a woven rug. They just folded both ends together, stitched the edges, and added batting.

I love the way Michele from Three Men and A Lady used this scarf to add a punch of color to this chair. Putting it under, rather than over, the cushion gives it a more unique look and also makes it more functional by keeping it in place. If you haven't seen her entire bedroom makeover, you'll want to check it out here.

I also just wanted to say thank you to all of you who left such nice comments on my photo of The Turquoise Barn yesterday! I was pleasantly surprised and, for a very brief moment, was tempted to change my blog to a photo blog for interesting barns.

A big thank you to the people who were creative enough to paint their barn turquoise! Here's to going outside the box and being brave enough to decorate, whether it be with paint or something else, with the things that put a smile on your face (and, in their particular case, everyone else's).

The Turquoise Barn

This is a little departure from the photos that you normally see on this blog, and I'm not typically one to drive around taking photos of barns but... When we were out and about this past summer we drove by this TURQUOISE barn. It's been in the back of mind since then and when I recently purchased a new camera, it was the first thing I thought of.

I absolutely DO NOT know how to use the new camera yet except to point and click, so I know that this is not the best photo I could have taken. My nephew is a great photographer and gave me some tips, so I'll probably drive back out there and try it again at some point.

I also had ideas of how I was going to incorporate this into a fabulous post on Pantone's color of the year, which just happens to be turquoise, but that hasn't happened yet. I'm sure I'll get around to that eventually. In the meantime... Happy Wednesday! Hope you're enoying your day. We'll get back to decorating in the next post. :-)

Windows In Color

I apologize for two posts in one day, but wanted to do a quick post with a little something for those of you who aren't interested in the Craft Closet Shelf and Undermount Bin Tutorial that I posted earlier. (I need to get another blog page for tutorials or figure out how you can just get to them in a PDF document from a sidebar gadget. Suggestions welcome.)

When I saw this room by designer Steven Gambrel at houseandhome.com I was immediately awestruck by the windows. Aren't they beautiful?

I do a lot of remixing around here that Mr. K has just learned to smile and put up with, but I'm fairly certain if he came home one night and I had painted the windows in a contrasting color it may possibly put him over the edge. Sigh... They are pretty though, aren't they?

Have a great day!

I've decide to just link to tutorials when I do them rather than putting the entire thing in a post. The tutorial today is showing how we we made the shelves and mounted the undermount bins shown above for the Craft Closet.

Accessorizing Your Walls - Bookshelves

House Beautiful Photo Robert Trachtenberg

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a good weekend. It was warm and sunny here in Minnesota (in the 30's) and I loved it.

Bookshelves can be a great way to fill a blank wall, and, depending on your budget, they don't need to be expensive. (First let me get off track a little by noticing the layered rugs in the first photo and the way that they've hung the mirror on the front of the bookshelves. I like...)

See the large blank wall in the before photo of this room below?

BEFORE

In the after photo you can see that they've filled the wall with IKEA bookcases. Painting the backs out in a contrasting color really makes a dramatic statement, and they've decided to hang some artwork on the front of the shelves as well, which again, I love!

These aren't bookshelves obviously, but I thought the way they used this plate rack to display photos was interesting.

You may not want to fill your entire wall with these, but I love Martha's idea for making bookshelves out of benches...
