Creative Decorating Ideas - 11

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

We saw a long lumbar pillow in this creative decorating post but here is a smaller one used in a different way with other pillows. Still loving the idea...

Rather than hanging a bulletin board, make a statement by upholstering and framing a large cork board and leaning it against the wall...

"Wallpaper" your walls with photos. Normally this idea would be a little busy for me, but they've used all white mats and the frame colors are consistent with the colors used in the furnishings and fabrics in the room which keeps it from getting crazy. Notice how they've also done a version of the color block by leaving a wide white border around the wall color...

Turn a closet into a cozy reading nook with a built-in twin bed...

If your room is feeling a little too neutral and you don't want to make a big commitment to color, hang inexpensive artwork in colorful frames. When you're tired of the color, swap out the artwork and paint the frames a different color or go all neutral again.

We've talked about painting ceilings before but we haven't shown the idea of using using high gloss white paint on the ceiling like Alex Bates, the creative director of West Elm, did on the ceiling in her beach cottage to reflect the natural light...

She also used chalked lines to turn the family's deck into a game board for oversize chess pieces. Fun!

Hope you're having a great day!

Ideas to Bring Home The Beach

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Do you ever wish you lived on or by the beach (I could definitely live in the first image in this post!) or would you just love to add a coastal cottage style to your home? If so, you'll want to check out Coastal Living's 21 Ideas to Bring Home The Beach! I really enjoyed reading designer Carter Kay 's tips on ways to bring a coastal vibe into your home (and of course I loved the beautiful images of the home). Here are just some of the images and tips from the Coastal living slideshow:

Nature inspired furniture with pops of color...

A restful ocean-inspired palette, glass accessories, and graphic botanicals...

Textured draperies, beachy brightness, playful upholstery...

Unconventional beach-inspired art, texture, whimsy and wicker chairs...

For more photos, the rest of the 21 tips, and more detail on the tips I've shared here, visit Coastal Living.Photographer J. Savage Gibson

This beachy bedroom was not included in the Coastal Living article, but I saw it when I clicked through to Carter Kay's website and had to include it.

The Turquoise Barn

This is a little departure from the photos that you normally see on this blog, and I'm not typically one to drive around taking photos of barns but... When we were out and about this past summer we drove by this TURQUOISE barn. It's been in the back of mind since then and when I recently purchased a new camera, it was the first thing I thought of.

I absolutely DO NOT know how to use the new camera yet except to point and click, so I know that this is not the best photo I could have taken. My nephew is a great photographer and gave me some tips, so I'll probably drive back out there and try it again at some point.

I also had ideas of how I was going to incorporate this into a fabulous post on Pantone's color of the year, which just happens to be turquoise, but that hasn't happened yet. I'm sure I'll get around to that eventually. In the meantime... Happy Wednesday! Hope you're enoying your day. We'll get back to decorating in the next post. :-)

Happy Friday!

Hope it's warm enough where you are to still do a little of this sometime this weekend (love the sheers!)...

Pretty cold in Minnesota (although the sun is supposed to come out this weekend - yippee!), so any relaxation time may have to be spent more somewhere like this...

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend...

Outdoor Inspiration

Architectural Digest Photography: Bruce Buck

Well, it's happening. The Minnesota State Fair starts tomorrow which, for me at least, marks the beginning of the end (of summer). While I have no intention of focusing on that fact and am determined to squeeze every moment of enjoyment out of what is left of summer, I know that this winter I will be dreaming of places like this. Sunshine, warm temperatures, being outside... :-)
